Indian benchmark equity indices ended lower on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, snapping a four-session winning streak amid selling pressure in information technology stocks and continued concerns over foreign fund outflows and global geopolitical developments. The BSE Sensex declined 329.91 points, or 0.44%, to close at 74,529.08, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 85.30 points, or 0.36%, to settle at 23,329.
IT stocks were among the major drags on the market, with HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra and Infosys witnessing pressure as investors remained cautious about the sector’s demand outlook and earnings prospects. Fourteen of the sixteen major sectoral indices ended in negative territory, while weakness was also visible across the broader market, with small-cap and mid-cap indices edging lower.
Market sentiment was also affected by continued foreign institutional investor selling and uncertainty surrounding global geopolitical developments. Foreign investors had sold Indian equities worth around ₹576 crore in the previous session, while domestic institutional investors provided support through purchases of nearly ₹2,797 crore.
Global cues remained mixed. Oil prices were closely watched after crude prices declined amid reports pointing to the possibility of diplomatic discussions between the United States and Iran. Brent crude futures had fallen, although later market movements remained sensitive to developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and broader geopolitical tensions.
Despite the overall weakness, some stocks bucked the trend. Coal India gained after a brokerage upgrade, while shares of Eternal, InterGlobe Aviation and Titan were among the notable gainers. Investors now remain focused on global market trends, crude oil prices, foreign fund flows, currency movements and upcoming corporate developments for further direction.
Overall, Tuesday’s session reflected cautious investor sentiment, with the Sensex and Nifty giving back some of their recent gains as technology stocks and broader market concerns weighed on domestic equities.
