AI Policy
Himalayan Observer uses artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help our journalists work faster. This policy explains how, and the limits we place on that use.
Journalists are responsible for what we publish
Every article we publish is reviewed and approved by an editor, however it was drafted. AI tools never publish anything on their own.
How we use AI
- Drafting assistance. Our journalists may use AI tools to produce a first draft from source material such as official statements, press releases, reports or our own earlier reporting. The journalist checks the draft against the sources, corrects it, and edits it before it goes to an editor.
- Editing assistance. AI tools may suggest headlines, summaries, search descriptions and topic tags. An editor decides whether to use each suggestion.
- Images. We may use AI tools to create illustrations. These are always labelled "AI-generated image" in their caption or credit.
What we do not do
- We do not publish AI-generated quotations, or attribute words to anyone that they did not say.
- We do not use AI to invent facts, figures, sources or events.
- We do not use AI-generated images to depict real, identifiable people or to show news events as if they were photographs of those events.
- We do not enter readers' personal information into AI tools.
Accountability
If you think we have got something wrong, in content produced with or without AI tools, see our Corrections Policy or Grievance Redressal.
