UAE and Israel Honour Indian Pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for Thwarting Cockpit Attack

Captain Machchhar sustained serious injuries while unlocking the cockpit door to save 174 passengers on a flydubai flight, earning high civilian honours from Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv.

ABU DHABI, Nov. 2: Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who prevented a mid-air tragedy aboard flydubai flight FZ1073 after being attacked by his co-pilot, has been officially honoured by the United Arab Emirates and nominated for Israel's highest civilian bravery award as he continues his recovery from severe injuries.

The incident took place on September 30 during a scheduled flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv carrying 174 people. Captain Machchhar was physically assaulted inside the cockpit by his co-pilot. Despite sustaining grave injuries and repeatedly losing consciousness, the captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling cabin crew members and passengers to intervene, subdue the assailant, and secure the flight deck. The aircraft was subsequently rerouted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

In recognition of their actions, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conferred the First Class Order of Zayed II on Captain Machchhar and the flight crew for their extraordinary courage and professionalism. The honours were presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence, during a ceremony attended by Vice President and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The UAE leadership commended the crew’s devotion to passenger safety under extreme duress, reaffirming the state's commitment to aviation security.

Israel has also announced plans to confer its highest civilian honour on the pilot. Israeli President Isaac Herzog wrote to Captain Machchhar to confirm that he will receive the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism once he recovers. In his letter, President Herzog commended the captain's resilience and judgment under direct threat, likening his conduct to historic acts of valour in the region.

Support for Captain Machchhar has also been expressed by the resident community in the UAE. At the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, prayers were conducted by priests and devotees for his swift recovery and for strength for his family.

Captain Machchhar remains under medical care for his injuries while international commendations continue to highlight the crew's effort in averting a fatal crash.
